Anogeissus leiocarpa is a tall evergreen tree native to savannas of Tropical Africa. It is the sole West African species of the genus Anogeissus, a genus otherwise distributed from tropical central and east Africa through tropical Southeast Asia. The bark of Anogeissus is particularly concentrated into compounds able to stimulate the natural production of fibrillin, the glycoprotein that gives skin youthful firmness and buoyancy and is responsible for supporting the structure of the skin.
Anogeissus protects existing collagen and elastin by inhibiting the enzymes that degrade them, and it generates more fibrillin, a springlike filament that gives skin bounce. It accelerates the wound healing process by strengthening the fibrillin fibres, thus providing elasticity and firmness to the skin. In essence, it helps rebuild natural collagen and elastin fibers, and promotes skin cell turnover.
