Escin is the name of saponins extracts from horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum). It is a potent anti-inflammatory compound which reduces capillary fragility and helps prevent leakage of fluids into the surrounding tissues, which can cause swelling. Escin stimulates microcirculation by opposing water retention. It shows beneficial effects on venous insufficiency and associated conditions such as cellulitis.
Escin has anti-oedematous, anti-inflammatory and phlebotonic properties. It also exhibits astringent, vasoconstrictor, vasoprotective as well as circulation boosting properties. It acts as an antioxidant to help inhibit the enzymes collagenase and elastase which leads to healthier collagen and supportive skin matrix and also seems to have anti-inflammatory action. Since it is a venotonic and anti-edematous ingredient, it helps to remove excess extra-cellular water. Escin also helps reduce dark under-eye circles and puffiness and simultaneously reduces fine lines and wrinkles.
Escin is conventionally used in the symptomatic treatment of functional disorders of cutaneous capillary fragility such as ecchymoses, petechia, venous insufficiency (pain, heaviness, cramp, oedemas and itching) and in the symptomatology of haemorroidal crisis.
