Gymnema Extract
"For nutraceutical use, Alchem offers Gymnema Extract with all its inherent benefits"

Gymnema sylvestre is a herb native to the tropical forests of southern and central India and Sri Lanka. It is also known as gymnema, cowplant, Australian cowplant, gurmari, gurmarbooti, gurmar, periploca of the woods, meshasringa, Bedki cha pala and miracle fruit. Chewing the leaves destroys the ability to discriminate the “sweet” taste, giving it its common name, gurmar, or “sugar destroyer.” The major bioactive constituents of G. sylvestre are a group of oleanane-type triterpenoid saponins known as gymnemic acids. Besides this, other plant constituents are flavones, anthraquinones, hentriacontane, pentatriacontane, α and β-chlorophylls, phytin, resins, d-quercitol, tartaric acid, formic acid, butyric acid, lupeol, β-amyrin-related glycosides and stigmasterol.

Gymnema Extract is a stomachic, diuretic, refrigerant, astringent, and tonic. It has been found to increase urine output and reduce hyperglycemia in both animal and human studies. Gymnema’s antidiabetic activity appears to be due to a combination of mechanisms. Two animal studies on beryllium nitrate – and streptozotocin-diabetes rats found Gymnema extracts doubled the number of insulin-secreting beta cells in the pancreas and returned blood sugars to almost normal. Gymnema increases the activity of enzymes responsible for glucose uptake and utilization, and inhibits peripheral utilization of glucose by somatotrophin and corticotrophin. Plant extracts have also been found to inhibit epinephrine-induced hyperglycemia.

The primary clinical application for this botanical is as an antidiabetic agent. Gymnema Extract has been the object of considerable research since the 1930s, with promising results for types 1 and 2 diabetes.

The product addresses broad spectrum physiological concerns and has the band width and capabilities to meet expectations. Regular use should exhibit demonstrable results to inhibit various health related issues.
